About Moyston
Our Community
Moyston is situated in a picturesque area with magnificent views of the Grampians. Approximately 350 people live in and around the town. Many of these people live on small lifestyle properties a few kilometres from the township. Those not engaged in agriculture are mainly employed in Ararat (15km), Stawell (30km) and Halls Gap (35km). Primary production includes prime lambs, wool, beef cattle, grains, and hay and wine grapes.
A significant number of people have chosen the area for their retirement. Moyston also is the home of many creative and artistic individuals.
There is a thriving Primary School, which plays a key role in many aspects of community life. Secondary School students are serviced by a bus to Ararat schools.
Several small businesses operate in and around Moyston. Two significant businesses are the Moyston General Store serving excellent coffee and the Moyston Post Office.

Local Services
Moyston township has reticulated water and a weekly general rubbish collection service which also extends to some areas closer to the township.
For outlying residents the Transfer Station off Moyston West Rd is open twice a week for General Rubbish and also accepts Recycling, Green Waste and Steel from all residents in the area. (Note: Council Fees are charged for this service).
A mobile library service visits once a week.
A Maternal Health nurse comes to the Moyston School once a month.
For those unable to drive to Ararat, a Vline bus service between Ararat and Warrnambool stops in Moyston 3 days a week (Tuesday, Friday and Sunday).
After much lobbying by Progress and the community, a new water standpipe was set up in Moyston by GWM Water with access only via an electronic key tag. This enabled outlying residents to cart their own stock and domestic water.
The East Grampians Pipeline Project will see water piped through the district. This is non potable, mainly for stock and garden use. First customers who have signed up are due to be connected in 2022.
Our Strengths and Assets
An important asset is our proximity to the Grampians, and our location on the main tourist road to the Grampians. Tourist businesses include viticulture, accommodation and the Moyston General Store/Café which provides tourist information, selling a variety of local products as well as being renowned for it’s coffee.
The main community infrastructure is located at the Moyston Recreation Reserve, which includes a large Oval, two multipurpose netball courts, change rooms, a kitchen and a function area that seats over 100 people, which is available to hire. It is also home to the Moyston Petanque group with a Piste and social area.
The historic Moyston Hall is another important public asset, being recently upgraded. It is the local venue for touring musicians as well as being available to hire for gatherings and local groups.
The Local War Memorial is located next to the Hall in Brooke Street.
Moyston Community Dinners
The Moyston Primary School Council initiated the Monthly Community Dinners, held on the first Friday of the month. They identified a need for a regular community gather after the General Store closed in 2011. The school mostly hosts the evenings when they fall within school terms and the other months they are offered to various local groups.
