Welcome to Moyston

The Moyston Progress Committee welcome you to the Moyston Community.

Moyston is situated in a picturesque area with magnificent views of the Grampians.   Approximately 350 people live in and around the town.   Many of these people live on small lifestyle properties a few kilometres from the township.  Those not engaged in agriculture are mainly employed in Ararat (15km), Stawell (30km) and Halls Gap (35km).    Primary production includes prime lambs, wool, beef cattle, grains, and hay and wine grapes.

A significant number of people have chosen the area for their retirement.  Moyston also is the home of many creative and artistic individuals.

There is a thriving Primary School, which plays a key role in many aspects of community life.  Secondary School students are serviced by a bus to Ararat schools.

Several small businesses operate in and around Moyston.   Two significant businesses are the Moyston General Store serving excellent coffee and food, Clayfield Wines and the Post Office.

We also encourage you to join the Moyston Community Noticeboard Facebook Group to keep up to date with current activities.

We hope you find this website a useful resource and a connection to your community.

Moyston History

GOLD RUSH!

In 1857, while sheltering from bad weather, two men who had struck out west from Ararat toward the Grampians, noticed a deserted shepherd’s hut on the outskirts of where Moyston now lies. The hut was only a rough structure of slab and bark walls and a chimney constructed of sods of earth. While warming themselves by the fire they had lit, they were amazed to see small specimens of gold in the chimney sods. They picked out nearly two pennyweights. Immediately there was a rush to the area, but only a few prospectors got any gold and the rush was described as a failure.

Community Groups.

Moyston is very lucky to have an active community with many clubs and associations, which are listed in the table at the back. The community is well placed to deliver a range of activities and events that appeal to the local community and tourists alike. Of particular note is the annual Sheep Dog Trials,  the longest continuously running sheepdog trials in Victoria possibly Australia. It draw participants from all over Victoria and interstate.

We look forward to welcoming current and new residents to be a part of one or many of our diverse range of Community Groups. We might only be a small country town, but we’re very passionate about our little community.
